First up, this is a fundraiser in gratitude to what Macmillan have done, and continue to do for the people close to me who have, and continue to use the support they offer.
My reasons for joining in with Mullet May-hem started initially with my partner, Louise, suggesting it, and attempting to raise some money for Macmillan.
Louise was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour midway through 2024. At that moment everything changed. She is receiving ongoing treatment to control the tumour, which naturally takes it's toll on her physical and mental wellbeing. I am so proud of how she deals with it all, and keeps going. And the support that Macmillan offers definitely assists in that.
My dad, Tony (A.K.A Rob), was also diagnosed in 2023 with inoperable bowel cancer. Another I am so proud of, as he continues his fight with regular treatment too, to control the tumour. There have been many times along the way that it was suggested that he wouldn't make it this far, but he manages to pull on through time and time again to keep going.
Thirdly, my mom; Glynis. Taken from us in 2020, following a late diagnosis of liver cancer. It was already too late once the diagnosis had been made, but those final moments we managed to spend together will be cherished forever. This was her second battle with cancer, after having it being discovered in her eye, which she subsequently lost, years earlier. Macmillan helped her cope throughout the first ordeal, and she bounced back and continued on as before, so admirably.
Macmillan's work stretches far beyond the realms of just my circle, but seeing it in action in such a small but direct snapshot, really does emphasise what they are doing for many other people and families like us. The work that they do is invaluable to helping those going through cancer.
This fundraising is in continued support of Louise, and my Dad. And in memory of my dear Mom.
And to ensure that Macmillan can continue their work to help others like us, and everyone who ever finds themselves in need of their support.
